Brussels – The Anticancer Fund is pleased to announce its commitment to the Community 365 of the European Cancer Organisation. By participating in this network, the Anticancer Fund will provide ideas, guidance and resources in convening stakeholders and building consensus in the European cancer community.

As an international non-profit organisation, the Anticancer Fund connects scientists from all over the world and enhances research through partnerships. Because together we can achieve more, a collaboration with the European Cancer Organisation was an obvious choice.

The Anticancer Fund wants to make a statement by signing in among the first philanthropic organisations to join the Community 365 initiative, recently launched by the European Cancer Organisation. The initiative welcomes charity, philanthropy and industry contributors to participate in nine Focused Topic Networks around important issues in the cancer field.

Initially the Anticancer Fund will focus on two Networks:

• Through our participation in the Health Systems and Treatment Optimisation Network, we want to bring to the agenda the clinical adoption of valuable treatment options that are neglected by other players in the field. Non-commercial clinical research deserves to be explored, because it often has the potential to deliver a clear societal benefit.
• Inequalities occur in all aspects of our society, including cancer prevention, control, access to treatment and survival. We want to point out the weak spots in the European health care to address these problems. We especially would like to pay attention to increasing health literacy. Cancer patients should be able to understand and use health care information, so that they can make appropriate decisions about their treatment.

Being a non-profit and independent organisation focused on cancer treatments, we have identified unmet needs in the cancer field. Cancer patients too often have limited options. By joining the Community 365 of the European Cancer Organisation as a Contributor, we would like to maximise the impact of the European Cancer Organisation’s initiatives for the benefit of the patients.

We are convinced that together, charity, philanthropy and industry contributors can reduce the burden of cancer in Europe. ‘We think it is of prime importance that different non-profit, knowledgeable foundations provide ideas and guidance for the Focused Topic Networks of the European Cancer Organisation. Ideally there should be a balance between for-profit and non-profit contributors in order to reach a real consensus in the European cancer community’, said Lydie Meheus, managing director of the Anticancer Fund.
